Life coaches and their benefits

The short answer is yes, if you are willing to help yourself. A life coach is a professional that prepares and helps people to improve their lives in a specific way. Moreover, a life coach learns from the people they help, so the relationship between the two is more at parity.

What is a life coach?

Life coaches are instrumental in helping a person change careers, developing healthy and long-term relationships, loosing weight or meeting a goal, improve self-confidence or self-understanding; in my case, I help individuals with business goals, such as business planning, reorganization and others with resume writing and interview preparation.

Life coaches, though not therapists, help people to deal with stress and time management or any set of areas that improve a person’s overall life quality and balance – through prioritization and goal setting. Life coaches differ from therapists in that they deal with the present and toward the future rather than focusing on the past. Also, life or business coaches should not be confused with business consultants, the former aids their client in achieving more in their professional life, while the latter advised on financial and business matters. Through my practice, Retail Consulting Solutions, I offer a hybrid of both and most of my clients have benefited.

Who can benefit from using a life coach?

The answer is anyone that wants to improve practically any aspect of their life but has difficulty in doing so. People who use life coaches are not limited to any demographic: they can be students, professionals, stay-at-home mothers reentering the job market, those wishing to advance their career or change careers, continuing their education, or those looking to accomplish a set of goals.

Considerations in deciding if someone needs a life coach are:

  • Though successful, I am not fulfilled and want to know why
  • I’m doing well, but am stressed out most of the time
  • I can’t seem to strike a balance between work and family
  • I have personal problems that seem to prevent me from reaching certain goals
  • I feel stuck either creatively or professionally
  • Though generally happy, I do not feel as though I’m making the most of my life
  • I want to make my business more successful
  • Different career options intrigue me and I want to explore other career paths
  • My professional and/or personal life seems stagnate and I want to make an improvement

What types of life coaches are there?

There is not a set standard or classification for life coaches and each but there are recognized codes of ethics and professional responsibilities (e.g. Codes of Ethics from the ICF: International Coach Federation). Often, those who are life coaches are familiar in a number of areas as many parts of our personal and professional lives overlap and are often intertwined within those relationships.
